2007 - Final Post
(Meant to upload this earlier but was holidaying in Dec, followed by work deadlines in Jan. Anyway, here goes...)
This will be my last post for 2007. It's a list of memorable stuff, both good and bad that I experienced this year.
1. Most memorable word learnt: "Redesignation".
Redesignation happens if you are "promoted" to a senior position but don't get the perks like increment in pay, benefits, etc. In other words, 加工但没有加工钱。Promotion in my company is a myth basically. My next level of real promotion is Assistant Director, which I don't see how it will ever happen.
Funny thing is, I got bypassed for a redesignation twice and I do feel a tinge of disappointment! Due to the lack of career advancement, next thing I'm considering is resignation. (notice how alike the 2 words are like? Irony works in funny ways!
2. Not all Jokes are Funny.
I initially thought the dumbest joke I heard this year came from 石康军. When I was learning singing from him, he asked if I was Singaporean. I said yes. He said, "那你为什么要赶车去JB?" He said that because I was rushing through a song. There was an awkward silence for like 10 seconds because I didn't know whether to laugh. He's so lucky he has other talents.
Thankfully for him, my Uncle topped the dumbest joke list. He was watching the news about some flooding village and this poor man was sitting on the roof of his house. My uncle looked at my brother who was away to go on exchange programme and said, "Hey Jason, wouldn't it be funny if you went Hong Kong and we saw you on TV looking like that?" Awkward silence and inner disgust ensued.
3. Winning is Good.
2007 marked the first time I led a school team to victory. It was Orientation 2007 and our faculty won the first-ever Challenge Shield. We made a great eagle mascot (complete with feathers). We had an original dance choreographed by our colleague. An original storyline and cheer created by the students. And we won despite being the 2nd smallest faculties. We basically steamrolled the other faculties which made embarassing mascots and had lacklasture cheers.
4. Where is the Writing?
Creativity came to a halt as 2007 marked the first time in 3 years that I didn't write a script. Work has effectively killed my creativity. On the bright side, everyone in the office knows that I am a good writer and they dump all sorts of writing jobs to me. Come to think of it, is that good?
5. The Teacher and The Student.
2007 also marked the year when I improved and gained popularity as a teacher, but chose to take on extra courses to gain spiritual benefits. I took 6 weeks of singing and 12 weeks of watercolour painting. I can't say I'm a genius in both but I have made improvements and gotten a few praises. So it's enough for now.
6. Angry Tears.
2007 was also memorable because I cried in front of my boss during appraisal. It's very embarassing but I couldn't help it. He was blind to my achievements and he never took the time to understand what his staff (not just me) did. Thankfully for me, he leaves the department on January 1st. So I can hope for a better life in the office now.
7. Flying High.
2007 was also the year when I sat on many plane rides. 1) Singapore to Shanghai, 2) Shanghai to Singapore, 3) Singapore to Cairo, 4) Cairo to Aswan, 5) Aswan to Abu Simbel, 6) Abu Simbel to Aswan, 7) Aswan to Cairo, 8) Cairo to Singapore.
And all this happened in December.
8. Happy New Year - Double Dosage.
2007 marked the first time in my life that I spent Christmas and New Year outside of Singapore. I was on a plane on Christmas and in Aswan, Egypt on New Year's Day. 2007 also saw me count down twice to the new year. That happened because I was in Egypt and it is 6 hours behind Singapore time. We noted the Singapore 0000 hours at 6pm Egypt time, and we noted the Egypt 0000 time later on. There was no celebration though. First time we counted down we were in one of the Egyptian temples. Second time we were stoning in a domestic airport waiting for our baggage which was late in arrival.
9. Worst Question Asked.
2007 was also the year where I fell sick the most. I was going to clinics in November and I had severe constipation and had to use the flit for some time. An incompetent doc sent me to Tan Tock Seng where I was asked to do blood tests and x-ray and they couldn't find anything wrong with me. The doc then asked "Can I see your rectum?" I stared at him (yes it's a him) and said "Can I say no?". Call me conservative but unless I'm really dying, no one sees my rectum!!!
10. Online Transactions Are Fun!
I became an online buyer/seller this year. It's been quite fun since and I've bought new stuff from websites and sold some of my old stuff, or some of the new stuff which didn't fit me. As people say, your junk could be someone else's treasure. Breaking even by the end of 2007. My rating stood at 10 at the end of 2007. Plan to up it to 45 by 2008. Slow and steady does it.
